Quality of Character
Mulan is so awesome she gets to number four on this list even though her movie is just OK and her supporting characters are pretty dull. Mulan does go against her parents wishes and run away from home, but it's TO SAVE HER FATHER'S LIFE! Seriously! How many girls on this list do you think would be that self-sacrificing, especially for their parent? (Ariel's reading this with a confused look on her face). Mulan is smart, managing to save the emperor and the entire kingdom from invading huns almost single-handedly. She's a fierce warrior. She's sweet and humble. She's just socially awkward enough to make you love her.
Overall Film Quality
MEHHHHHHHH. It's ok. I appreciate the spirit of the film and the message of female equality and self-sacrifice. In the end though I feel like the film doesn't know what it wants to be. Funny? Serious? The music feels awkward when it happens and most of the characters that aren't Mulan are wooden and dull. Don't get me wrong, I'll still watch it nine billion times, it's just a little phoned in compared to higher scoring films in this category.
It's not that Shang is a bad person. Sure he's sexist and mysoginistic, but he's just a product of his time. No, my real problem with Shang is that he is dull as a box o' rocks. I feel like the only reason he gets to be with Mulan is because he's the only good looking guy in the movie. No, really.
Another snoozefest. The other soldiers are just copy-paste token sexist soldiers. Mulan's parents are barely in the film and they mostly just stare meaningfully at one another (the grandmother is adorable, though). There's a lucky cricket that's... nothing. Mushu is just Eddie Murphy perfecting his voice for Donkey in Shrek. Oh the villain! So lame I can't remember his name. (googles) Shan Yu! (Thanks, google) has some of the lamest character design I've EVER seen. Seriously, look at his EYES, WTF?!
It's pretty lame, but what do you expect when Donnie Osmond is voicing the romantic male lead? Reflection is a sweet little song, but other than that, it just feels like old white guys trying to write asian influenced music. There's also NOT a lot of songs either, like they were thrown in last minute to try and lighten the film up. No dice.
Mulan, master of the outfit change. Seriously, this girl has more outfits than Aurora has lines in Sleeping Beauty. And they are all pretty darn gorgeous. The only issue I take (one brought up by my friend, Jackie, and she's so right) is that Disney ONLY sells the pink dress from the Matchmaker scene. Not only is that the dress from when Mulan is at her least awesome in the movie, it's ANOTHER PINK DRESS. Look how awesome the green and blue outfits are! Better yet, why not sell Mulan's warrior armor- the thing that really sets her apart from the other DH ladies?
