Disney Villain Countdown: 6/40
**Spoiler Alert! Some villains are revealed in plot twists, so if you haven't seen all the movies...**
Lady Tremaine is the primary reason I didn't just call this category "Fear" factor. Lady Tremaine might be the most stone cold villain in Disney's history. Scary? Perhaps not. Chillingly malicious? You betcha. This woman can make grown men flinch with a LOOK. I think the scariest aspect of Tremaine is not how far she's willing to go to advance her children (that's chilling), but the truly sick pleasure she seems to get out of Cinderella's misery. Gothel and Tremaine both found themselves with little girls, not their own, to raise. Gothel tries to be a mom. Tremaine? Locks up Cinderella and turns her into a slave. More chilling are the tiny moments or hints of kindness that she shows Cinderella, only to maliciously twist the situation to push Cinderella even lower. Good. God.
Lady Tremaine's design was heavily influenced by her voice actress (Eleanor Audley, a Goddess to Disney Villain afficionados). Tremaine's clothes are simple (if austere), but the real power behind Tremaine (visually) is how vividly she's animated. Just watch ^the bedroom scene, the way the animators used the light and played off the music to help build tension. Where Hades blows up (literally) over everything, Lady Tremaine simmers. She would have made a great politician, no?
Wit & Quotability
One of Tremaine's lower scores comparatively. Most of Tremaine's most memorable moments come from not WHAT she said, but HOW she said it.
This woman is a staple, and my husband and I had a serious battle over Tremaine not making it to the top 5. HALF A POINT. That's all that separates her. Something to be said about a villain that's just a woman, no magic powers, doesn't do a lick of physical damage to anybody, and yet he's one of the most memorable characters ever brought to screen by the glorious Nine Old Men. Hats off, Tremaine.
Behold! One of only two perfect scores in this category! The stepsisters and Lucifer are almost as well-known as Tremaine herself. but they never overshadow the Lady in the film. They compliment, they flesh out the story. They are bombastic and brash while Lady Tremaine is Frank-Underwooding in the corner. Such a gloriously evil ensemble in Cinderella.
In a film with some of the best Disney Songs of the early era, Tremaine gets none. I wonder if Disney underestimated how impactful she would be? Or maybe her highness, Ms. Audley, is too badass for frivolous melodies. Either way, neutral score.
