Quality of Character
I know a lot of you are saying WHO?? Sofia is a child princess developed for Disney Junior to create a marketing blitz. Mission accomplished, Disney. I’ve only managed to make it through a couple episodes of this show, but I feel pretty qualified in bringing her into this countdown. Sofia’s schtick is that she was a commoner who somehow became a princess, but she’s got an older sister so she’s not in any danger of actually becoming a queen. She spends her days going to princess contests and princess parties. She seems like a nice enough person, but she’s way too eager to fit in/ live up to her snobby older sister’s precedent, so Sofia ends up middling in this category.
Overall [TV Show] Quality
Far and away the lowest score in this category of any contestant. It’s targeted to the pre-k crowd, so there’s not a whole lot of room for wit (although I would argue that Yo Gabba Gabba manages it). The cool twist they’ve incorporated is that Sofia has a magic amulet that allows her to call on other Disney Princesses for help, so there are fun cameos from other DHs, but mostly it’s mind-numbing.
Not that I’ve seen, and thank goodness. She is WAY too young for that.
Ties in this category for lowest score. She has this weird rabbit that is a rip off of Thumper that follows her around, but he’s not as clever. The other young princesses are all SNOTTY and CATTY! Seriously! Huge gender stereotypes at play because all they want to do is have balls and put on make up and have slumber parties. UGH.
Disney Junior has shown themselves more than capable of decent tunes for their signature shows (Doc McStuffins earworm, anyone?) but Sofia just doesn’t seem to be getting any of the A material.
Disney knew the merchandising was where the money would be here, and they didn’t skimp on Sofia’s dress. It is a SUPER cute lavender ballgown with all the fouf and flair any little girl could want.
