Brace Yourselves... A New List Is Coming...

Brace Yourselves... A New List Is Coming...

I might be OCD. Just a little.  More clearly, I'm obsessive and compulsive... but I don't consider it a disorder.  I just really like getting my hands on a project and digging in, researching, writing, finessing the details.  Nowhere is this more evident than my approach to the Disney Heroine Countdown, where I embraced my love of rubrics to create a scoring system that was pretty foolproof.

Many people who've known me for a long time seemed a little surprised with the decision to spend so much time writing about Disney's prim-and-proper heroines.  In fact the most common response from readers?

This is all well and good, but... come on, Emily, WHERE IS THE VILLAINS LIST?

While my love and appreciation for Disney Heroines may have waxed and waned and waxed again over my lifetime, my love for Disney Villains never faltered.

It's not always easy being a Villains fan, especially at the parks.  I've gotten my share of Princess side-eye for my villain-adorned magic bands, and so has D.

However I struggled with the idea of ranking the Disney Villains from the OCD-rubric-needing side of things.  WHAT'S THE ANGLE?  With the heroines I had a clear goal in mind: evaluate them as role models for young girls.  Regardless of my personal feelings on Tinker Bell, she is not a very nice person in Peter Pan, so her ranking suffered for it.  With that angle, I could set aside a lot of my own personal bias, score the ladies, then let the chips fall where they may.  As I stated many times on the countdown, several rankings ended up surprising me when all the scoring was done.

I don't know if I'm capable of doing this with the villains.  That doesn't mean I am not going to try.  This is where YOU come in.

Three Cheers for Gaston!

Three Cheers for Gaston!

Firstly I need to figure out an angle for these villains.  The most sinister? The most likeable? Do I stick with the parenting angle and figure out which villains have the most to teach our children? Or do all these just sound like subcategories for the rubric to determine an overall score for [Iron Chef Voice] WHO WILL REIGN SUPREME as the best Disney Villain?

You've already seen me start to dig in to the villains in the "Supporting" category on the Disney Heroines countdown, so you know I feel pretty passionate.  This project will be a much larger undertaking, as I feel it's only fair to include live action as well as animated... although I haven't seen EVERY DISNEY MOVIE EVER (almost, but not all, I'm working on it).

As you can see, just the idea of this project sends my brain into a million different directions and checklists, so before I get ahead of myself...

I need your help and feedback.

D hasn't quite learned to appreciate the Villains yet

D hasn't quite learned to appreciate the Villains yet

Should I include live-action or only animated villains? [Or GASP are these two separate countdowns??]

What scoring categories should be considered? Is a good villain extra scary or approachable/sympathetic? Villain songs? Quotability? Costume and/or character design? Death scene? SIDEKICKS?!

Tell me, dear readers, what would YOU like to see be the criteria upon which I compare these dastardly characters? The last thing I want to do is get started on the project, start publishing, then have people say HOW COULD YOU LEAVE OUT _____________?!  I don't want to leave out ANYTHING. So please, feedback, I want to hear it.  Comment here, on facebook, in a message, anything you like. But do it NOW, because I'm itching to start a new project.
