Disney Villain Countdown: 38/40
**Spoiler Alert! Some villains are revealed in plot twists, so if you haven't seen all the movies...**
Anyone who's read my Disney Heroine Countdown knows I've got a huge chip on my shoulder when it comes to the shortcomings of Shan Yu, but they aren't particularly in this category. He's got an army, and a creepy sword, and weird flesh-colored demon nails, and vampire fangs. Plus he's as big as a (out)house, so that lends to a certain amount of intimidation.
Although not the very worst, he's near the bottom. It's so confusing: is he a man, or is he a demon? Why are the whites of his eyes black? Why does he have claws and fangs? I look at Shan Yu and think "what... the... f***."
Wit & Quotability
He's on par with Edgar score-wise, but for different reasons. Edgar is pathetic, Shan Yu is just a man of few words. Very. Few. Words.
Not really. He's not the lowest scoring candidate, but it's close. I'll give him that he doesn't really look like any other villain, but he has so little to contribute to Mulan's story that he actually drags down the overall quality of the film a bit. We know nothing about who he is or where he comes from or why he's so mad at the Emperor (ok, we get a sentence of him kvetching about the Great Wall being built... that it was a challenge to him?). In fact he's so boring, that while looking for video clips to include with his write up, the best moment I could find that included him was Mulan and her badassery wiping the floor with Shan Yu at the end, so enjoy his demise...
Shan Yu has a whole army of forgettable man/demon/thingies that say pretty much nothing the whole movie. He also has a bird/hawk thing that gets a couple of close shots, but has pretty much nothing to contribute. Boo. Lowest score in this category of any candidate!
None, thank goodness. Considering how bad the male lead's song in Mulan was, I shudder to think what a man-demon would have been singing. Neutral score awarded.
