Disney Villain Countdown: 30/40
**Spoiler Alert! Some villains are revealed in plot twists, so if you haven't seen all the movies...**.
Fear / Intimidation Factor
Frollo's relatively low ranking has nought to do with his score in this category. I was recently asked on twitter if there'd ever been a more terrifying villain than he. I say yes, there are plenty who score higher in this category, but none of them get the score Frollo does based on sheer creepy factor. Frollo is a character from a very adult novel, with very adult motives, that for some reason Disney tried to adapt to a child audience. He's intelligent, lustful, a corrupt religious and authority figure, and he's sooooo rapey toward Esmeralda. Ick. Frollo makes me say ICK ICK ICK.
Unique? Yes. But also so... weird... goofy... Researching images for this entry, I kept finding myself snickering at the freeze frames people grab of this guy. That nose... that dopey hat... those weird hair curly sideburn? things... his wee beady little eyes... his disproportionately gigantic mellon head.... the abundance of purple... It's not helping him when it comes to the qualities this countdown looks for in a villain.
Wit & Quotability
An average score. He's reasonably intelligent (he's risen to a position of political power). He also has his glorious religious guilt alphabet bit (see the clip below). It's not enough to really graduate him above that middle score, though.
I struggled on how to score this guy. Frollo is probably my least favorite Disney villain, personally and it's a testament to the impartiality of the rubric that he's not ranked any lower. With that said, he IS memorable. For mostly awful reasons, but I remember the guy. I can't think of another villain who's so religious and lusty. The score ends up being close to a default score, because I just... didn't know how to score this category.
Not really. He's got soldiers and stuff who answer to him... you could maybe even consider Phoebus for this category, but I erred on the side of "Not Really" and gave him a neutral score.
I may give Frollo a lot of crap for the rapey creeper thing, but his greatest sin? THE SINGING. Far and away the LOWEST score of any villain in this category. The voice talent for Frollo has a great, deep, creepy voice, but it just DOES NOT WORK when applied to these songs. Hellfire is the goofiest, most awkward song to ever feature a flaming strip tease. Ugh. He even sings AGAIN during "Out There" (which my brain constantly wants to compare to "Up There" from the South Park movie), and it's still awful.
