Disney Villain Countdown: 31/40
**Spoiler Alert! Some villains are revealed in plot twists, so if you haven't seen all the movies...**
Fear / Intimidation Factor
Shere Khan's highest-scoring category. Shere Khan is a sharp-tongued, man-eating tiger with vicious claws who goes from one jungle resident to the next, intimidating information out of everyone he encounters to find Mowgli. He is single-minded in his pursuits, and exquisitely confident in his ability to follow-through. High score, indeed.
Score suffers a bit here. As scary as Shere Khan is in personality, his design is sort of counter-intuitive. I mean, look at that underbite. It totally undermines the scary.
Wit & Quotability
Not great, actually. Seriously, all he does is go around beating animals up being all "Where's Mowgli?!" and the only thing he fears is fire? There's a lot scarier stuff out there. Plus you have to be a really stupid tiger to get into a fight with a bear, even if that bear IS Baloo. Honestly, I thought this score would be higher, but when I went digging for famous Shere Khan quotes? There really aren't many.
I'm thinking I might catch some flack for Shere Khan's position on this countdown. The Jungle Book was a pivotal film in the childhood of many of my peers, and it IS a great film, but if you look at it objectively? Shere Khan had very little to do with what made that film so fun to watch. King Louie? Oh hell yes. Baloo? For sure. Even stick-up-his-butt Bagheera has more to contribute. Shere Khan is the most one-dimensional villain. He does have one GREAT scene with Kaa that always makes me laugh, but it's because Kaa is so funny, not so much the tiger. Let's be frank, though: this movie shares a lot of similarities with Robin Hood, and Prince John/Hiss are clearly the superior feline/snake duo.
Again, while I love Kaa, he isn't a sidekick to Shere Khan, he just happens to be a short-term antagonist for Mowgli. Also [commence soapbox] as a hardcore Kipling reader, I was not a fan of the way they changed Kaa's character for the movie. She's he's cute and funny, but Kaa was so much more interesting in the book. Waaah wahhh listed to me, kvetching about a book being better than a movie. Shoot me, seriously. Neutral score awarded.
In a film filled with some of the best and most memorable Sherman Brothers songs, Shere Khan gets nothing. NOTHING. Denied. Neutral score.
